HOW WE WORK
Community-Led Solutions Designed to Last
Basecamp Foundation Kenya works with communities in the Maasai Mara to develop practical solutions that respond to local priorities, strengthen existing capacities and create opportunities that can be sustained over time.
Our approach recognises that lasting development cannot be delivered to a community from outside. It grows through participation, shared responsibility and the knowledge of people who understand their own opportunities and challenges. We therefore involve community members, local leaders and institutions throughout the development process—from identifying priorities and designing interventions to implementation, learning and accountability.
We combine this local knowledge with appropriate skills, resources, partnerships and evidence. The result is programming that addresses immediate needs while also strengthening the systems and relationships communities need to shape their own future.
FROM PARTICIPATION TO OWNERSHIP
Building Capacity Alongside Opportunity
Our programmes do more than deliver activities. They help people and local organisations build the confidence, knowledge and structures required to continue leading development beyond an individual project cycle.
This includes strengthening community leadership, supporting community-managed groups and institutions, expanding access to education and livelihood skills, and creating spaces where girls, women and other community members can participate meaningfully in decisions that affect them.
Because livelihoods, education, inclusion, water and environmental wellbeing are closely connected, we look for opportunities to link our interventions. This integrated perspective helps communities build resilience instead of addressing each challenge in isolation.
OUR APPROACH IN PRACTICE
Four Commitments That Guide Our Work
Community Participation
We involve communities in identifying priorities, shaping solutions, implementing activities and reviewing progress.
Local Leadership
We strengthen community groups, leaders and institutions so that they can coordinate action, manage resources and drive change locally.
Learning and Evidence
We document results, reflect on experience and use evidence to improve programme quality and adapt successful models for wider use.
Partnership
We collaborate with communities, public institutions and development partners to combine expertise, mobilise resources and sustain results.
SUSTAINABILITY BY DESIGN
Progress That Communities Can Own and Continue
Every programme is an opportunity to strengthen knowledge, leadership, relationships and livelihoods. By building these foundations together, we help create change that can continue delivering value beyond the life of a project.
