Basecamp Foundation Kenya views education as one of the most powerful and sustainable ways to transform communities. We work with schools, educators, parents and learners to make quality education more accessible, supportive and relevant.
Our education portfolio combines community-based interventions across schools in the Maasai Mara with the focused leadership model of Mara Girls Leadership School. Together, these initiatives strengthen learning environments, school governance, teaching capacity, learner wellbeing and pathways for talented girls to fulfil their potential.
We recognise that educational participation is shaped by more than what happens in a classroom. Infrastructure, nutrition, safety, family support, mentorship and responsive school leadership all contribute to whether a learner can attend, remain engaged and succeed.
COMMUNITY-BASED EDUCATION INTERVENTIONS
Strengthening the Whole Learning Environment
Our school-based work brings together the practical conditions and human relationships that help children learn and remain in education.
School Infrastructure
Classrooms, ablution blocks, dormitories, teachers’ residences, kitchens and dining facilities, ECDE playgrounds, fencing and rainwater-harvesting systems help create safer and more conducive schools.
School Leadership
Training for Boards of Management strengthens governance and helps school leaders manage institutions and resources more effectively.
Teacher Development
Capacity strengthening for ECDE teachers and STEM-focused training support stronger teaching practice and innovation in the classroom.
Learner Wellbeing
Bonga for Schools provides adolescents with supportive spaces to discuss challenges, build life skills and seek appropriate guidance.
Parent Engagement
Parenting seminars promote responsible caregiving and community action on school dropout, early pregnancy, early marriage and harmful practices.
School Feeding
Access to meals supports learners’ health, attendance and ability to concentrate throughout the school day.
MARA GIRLS LEADERSHIP SCHOOL
Educating a Generation of Community Leaders
Established by Basecamp Foundation Kenya in 2017, Mara Girls Leadership School is a model institution serving talented and promising Maasai girls from Narok West Sub-County. The school seeks to equip learners with the education, confidence and tools to thrive and contribute positive change in their communities.
With Kenya’s transition to the Competency-Based Curriculum, MGLS evolved from an upper-primary model into a Junior Secondary School serving Grades 7, 8 and 9. As reported in January 2025, each grade accommodated 24 learners, bringing the school population to 72 girls.
Learners also receive mentorship, counselling and guidance, alongside opportunities for spiritual, creative, social and physical development. The alumni programme helps former students remain connected, exchange ideas and encourage one another.
