Basecamp Foundation Kenya works with communities and partners to improve access to safe water and develop locally led solutions that connect basic needs, environmental stewardship and long-term resilience.
Narok County is semi-arid, and many communities in the Maasai Mara depend on livestock and pastoralism. Reliable water is therefore essential for people, animals, schools, health facilities and local livelihoods. Changing climate conditions and pressure on natural resources make practical, well-managed solutions increasingly important.
Our work combines targeted water infrastructure with the Green Villages approach, which supports people-led development one village at a time. The shared goal is to help communities meet essential needs while strengthening local responsibility for resources and solutions.
ACCESS TO SAFE WATER
Infrastructure Adapted to Local Needs
In partnership with Aqua Nirvana Foundation, BCFK has implemented water initiatives in communities, schools and other institutions across its project areas in the Mara.
Water Purification
Modern purification systems support access to cleaner and safer drinking water where available sources require treatment.
Rainwater Harvesting
Gutters and storage systems enable schools, health centres and communities to capture seasonal rainfall for later use.
Water Pumping Systems
Appropriate pumping infrastructure helps move water to locations where it can be accessed and used more effectively.
Spring Protection
Protection measures help reduce contamination and safeguard natural water sources used by institutions and surrounding communities.
GREEN VILLAGES
Integrated Solutions Rooted in Community Priorities
Green Villages promotes people-led development by piloting innovative responses to essential community needs. Rather than treating each challenge separately, the model brings together actions that can strengthen the wellbeing and resilience of an entire village.
Communities help identify priorities and shape locally appropriate solutions. This participatory approach supports ownership while creating opportunities to learn from each village and adapt successful models for other locations.
