Nashipae Adapts Her Livelihood During a Crisis
When COVID-19 forced Nashipae to close her salon, she looked for a safer way to continue earning and supporting her children.
Nashipae, a participant from the Nkoilale Bonga Centre, spoke with Basecamp Foundation Kenya during a food-relief outreach in Nkoilale village. Her salon had been her family’s main source of income, but public-health restrictions forced it to close.
With her children depending on her, Nashipae adjusted her work and began offering limited hairdressing services from home.
“When the salon closed, I began plaiting women’s hair from home so that I could earn something to sustain my family.”
Her experience reflected the reality facing many programme participants whose small enterprises and income-generating activities were disrupted. It also showed the determination of women who adapted their skills to keep their households going in an uncertain period.
