Keeping Girls Connected to Trusted Support
During pandemic-related school closures, continued contact between teachers, learners and parents helped a young student speak up about an uncomfortable situation and receive support.
In 2020, Basecamp Foundation Kenya included Mara Girls Leadership School learners and their families in community outreach. Alongside food, sanitation supplies and menstrual-hygiene materials, teachers maintained contact with girls who were spending extended periods away from school.
During one visit, a learner privately raised concerns about unwanted attention from an older boy who approached her when her parent was away. A trusted teacher listened, reinforced that the learner had done the right thing by speaking up, and involved her parent in strengthening safety and supervision.
The incident highlighted the increased protection risks children could face during prolonged school closures. It also demonstrated why trusted adults, open communication and continued learner follow-up are essential.
The learner’s name and identifying details have been withheld to protect her privacy and dignity.
